ADRA Helps Flood Survivors in Namibia ... In the small town of Mariental, Namibia, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) provided emergency relief aid for survivors of flooding that forced 14,000 residents to evacuate, submerging homes and businesses, and creating up to US $8 million in damages. ADRA distributed various relief items, such as mattresses, rice, and other food items for 150 survivors. The flooding occurred during late February, when heavy rain caused the Hardap Dam, Namibia's largest dam, to overflow its boundaries, displacing thousands of people. According to the Government of Namibia Emergency Management Unit, the most urgent needs are clean water, shelter, and food.
Adventist Scholar Discusses Eastern Orthodox Traditions ... An examination of the attitudes toward religious diversity and individual freedom in the Eastern Orthodox mystical tradition was the focus of a lecture given by Dr. Michael Kulakov, an associate professor at Columbia Union College. The lecture themed, "The Infinite Diversity of Persons: Individual Personality in the Orthodox East," marked the 25th anniversary of the G. Arthur Keough lectures. The annual lectures, held in memory of the much-loved professor, explore scholarly issues in relationship to Adventist faith.
Kulakov who in 1988 founded the Zaoksky Theological Seminary -- the first Protestant institution of higher learning in Soviet Russia -- said it was at the seminary that he came to realize that "we need to enter into a meaningful constructive dialogue with our brothers in the Eastern Orthodox faith. I felt it extremely important to learn of that tradition and find ways of communicating meaningfully and constructively with the representatives of Eastern orthodox tradition," said Kulakov. The presentations came from Kulakov's doctoral thesis on Eastern Orthodox tradition.
Adventist School in Philippines Offers Ph.D. Program ... The Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS) has received approval from the International Board of Education of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to offer a Ph.D. in Business degree program. This marks the first time an Adventist institution of higher learning has received the approval from the highest level of church administration to grant a doctoral degree in the business field. The program is scheduled to begin in mid-2007.
86-year-old is a Successful Fundraiser ... At 86-years-old Lydia Rajala is responsible for 85 percent or 70,000 Skr (US$8,750) of the total funds collected by the Finnish Seventh-day Adventist Church in Stockholm. The donations Rajala has collected will go for humanitarian projects throughout the world such as literacy, feeding, and clothing programs; school building initiatives in developing countries; maternal education; and job training. Recently, Sweden's largest Christian newspaper ran a story about Rajala's work.
The Quiet Hour names new CEO ... The Quiet Hour, a 68-year-old worldwide evangelistic ministry headquartered in Redlands, California, has named T. Michael Porter as its new chief executive officer. Porter started his new duties in April, following his ministry as president of the Adventist church in the Middle East and director for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), both headquartered in Cyprus.
Home Schooled Students Win Robotics Challenge ... The challenge was for students from fifth to eighth grades to design, build, and program autonomous robots from Lego brick kits for exhibition on challenge courses representing real-world problems. Three home schooled students: 12-year-old Andrew Donesky, 13-year-old Evan Richards and 11-year-old Ellis Richards met the challenge held at Southern Adventist University in Tennessee, United States and received the Directors Award. They will compete at the national Adventist Lego League championship tournament in May.
