United States: Church treasurer Robert Osborn dies ... Longtime Seventh-day Adventist Church finance officer Robert Osborn, whose service included overseeing the world church's investments as associate treasurer until his 1993 retirement, died August 24 at age 85 in Maryland. Osborn also served previous treasury stints in the church's Central California, Middle East and South American regions, and served as secretary of the Loma Linda Corporation. Osborn graduated from Adventist-owned La Sierra College -- now University -- and spent four years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, two sons -- Richard Osborn, president of Adventist-owned Pacific Union College, and Ken Osborn, associate treasurer for the church's North American region -- five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Jamaica: Hurricane Dean damages church buildings ... More than 50 Seventh-day Adventist church structures and many church members' homes and crops sustained damage when Hurricane Dean hammered the southern coast of Jamaica August 19 on its way to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Also hit was Adventist-owned Northern Caribbean University. Patrick Allen, president of the Adventist Church in the West Indies, reports that the church in the region, including the Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Jamaica, is mobilizing to assess damages and offer aid and supplies. More than 230,000 Adventists worship in 670 churches in Jamaica.
