New Adventist president envisions a church marked by prayer, revival

Emphasis on evangelism and stewardship practical keys to 5-year strategic plan

In his first address to employees at Seventh-day Adventist world church headquarters, church President Ted N. C. Wilson outlined a strategic plan for the denomination meant to spur a renewal of members' commitment to the church's mission.

Adventist Church President Ted N. C. Wilson introduces his priorities for the denomination for the next five years during a July 28 speech at the church's world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. Wilson was joined on stage by Orville Parchment, left, assistant to the president, and Mark Finley, newly appointed assistant to the president for evangelism. [photo: Megan Brauner]

An emphasis on personal and corporate prayer and the launch of a Revival and Reformation Committee at church headquarters featured prominently in the plan.

The belief that Christians cannot "hasten or delay" the Second Coming is a misconception, Wilson said. While the "manufacture" of programs or activities at church headquarters cannot "force" Christ's return, a "revival of true godliness" and "humble submission to God" among Christians can, he said, citing a quote by church co-founder Ellen G. White.

In the New Testament book of Acts, Wilson said the apostles are described as being "of one accord" and "in one place" -- conditions he cited as responsible for the outpouring of God's spirit. God is looking for a similar mindset among Adventists today, he said.

Wilson said he recently received an email in which someone expressed concern that a push for revival among Adventists might usher in legalism or an exclusivist spirit.

Not so, Wilson assured more than 400 employees gathered in the auditorium of church headquarters today for the address. "This is not a legalistic message; this is a message of love, of hope and of encouragement ... God has given us this message, and we are to share it, being as inclusive as possible," he said.

Sharing that message hinges on prayer, Wilson said, urging employees to embrace an emphasis on personal and corporate prayer.

"You are dedicated, educated, consecrated people," Wilson said, "but if we're not praying in humility ... our talents are worth virtually nothing,"

No single prayer style is mandatory, Wilson said. "If you don't feel comfortable praying out loud, you don't have to -- you can just pray in your own mind. We're not trying to force people into a certain 'shoe' and make it fit. But we're to pray. I don't know what people do without prayer," he said.

Prayer is also expected to punctuate the meetings of the new Revival and Reformation Committee, Wilson said. "Don't let the name put you off. Committees don't necessarily kill everything," he said. The committee is expected to gather "earnest" people striving to "help God's people prepare a setting for [his] spirit to do his work," Wilson said.

Armando Miranda, a world church general vice president, was named chair of the committee, with recently retired General Vice President Mark Finley serving as vice-chair in his new role as an assistant to the president for evangelism.

More than 400 employees of the Adventist Church's headquarters building attended Wilson's address, held during morning worship. The building is home to five church entities: the world church's headquarters, the denomination's North American Division, Adventist Risk Management, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency and Griggs University. Wilson outlined some specific expectations for the next five years. He introduced the launch of international Bible and mission conferences, hubs where pastors, teachers, Health Ministries workers and others can convene to study the bible together to better grasp the church's "spiritual destiny." Ideally, Wilson said, the meetings will spur outreach. "We're not just to sit there and draw everything in, but to go out," he said.

The next five years will also see a continued emphasis on outreach through technology, Wilson said, citing the impact of the Hope Channel, Adventist World Radio, the Global Internet Evangelism Network and the church's many Web-based ministries.

Wilson said the church under his watch would also safeguard core emphases such as Adventist education and Health Ministries. "Redoubling" the Connecting with Jesus project, in which Ellen G. White books are distributed to members worldwide, is also a priority, he said. Headquarters employees participated in the project this morning -- a collection was taken to send copies of White's book The Great Controversy to every household in the surrounding postal district.

Wilson also said involving young people in the church's mission was his goal -- "not just putting them on a committee, but going far beyond that."

A focus on both evangelism and stewardship is expected to be the catalyst for the church's success the next five years, Wilson said. "When you have those two things heading in the right direction, everything else falls into place."

The strategic plan is not comprehensive or concrete, and is open to suggestion, Wilson said. "The Adventist Church is not an organization that promotes 'kingly power.' We don't just have someone at the head who says, 'That's it, do it,' and it happens ... The best way is to come together in prayer in a setting where a multitude of counselors brings wisdom," he said.

Soliciting the prayers and participation of employees as the church moves forward, Wilson said he wanted "open communication" throughout the building and the church. "My office is open. If you have an idea or suggestion -- I don't care how small or large it is -- you can contact me and talk to me."

Thank you, brother president. What you said is what we need in Romania too. I am very glad to hear about this kind of spiritual directions. I (as many of us, pastors and members in Romania church) am praying for our leaders and for you. Through His Holy Spirit, God keep you in strength and protect you daily. Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
Sincerely, pastor Pavel

Those who long to see Jesus come would be very willing to eager to support you in this great work of revival and reformation, but we must remember that repentance - corporate and individual repentance is the condition for the revival and reformation that we so desperately need.

We are praying for you Brother Wilson :)

We really need to pray more. We need to humble ourselves before the Lord, asking Him to forgive our lukewarm condition and fill us with the Holy Spirit to transform us and use us to reach out with the Gospel.
We are praying that the Lord may continue guiding His Church through the leaders He has appointed for this hour. God bless you, pastor Wilson.

What we need is to go back in our principles as they were in the Pentecostal time of the disciples. They were praying to recieve the Holy Spirit into their lives, before they went out and preached the gospel. The best example would be Jesus, waking up very early to pray to His Father. He would also spend the whole night praying, to do His Father's work. Every church should have a Minister of Prayer, as they have a different Minister inside the Church.

EXCELENTE NOTICIA!
Excelente propuesta de desarrollo!
Que bueno es leer que el líder de la ASD está conciente de la falta de compromiso de los feligreses con la Iglesia.
Que bueno que se nos incluya, como jóvenes!

Dear Brother, President Wilson,
I am enthused as I study the Holy Scriptures concerning the soon coming of our Lord Jesus. I am also glad to hear that the Lord has put that enthusiasm in your heart, for doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord. I pray that the Seventh Day Adventist Church will not eliminate from its institutions its rightful name, which is what makes us unique and also gives us our true identity as believers in the doctrinal pillars of our faith.
God bless you keep you.

Conngratulation Pastor to your new office. It is like yesterday when you sat in my car as I drove you to the campus of the then ASWA, now Babcock University in Nigeria.

Your message is what the Church needs at this time of the world history. I hope and pray that all of us together will join to achieve the goal. Once again, Congratulation!

I do not have a comment. While in Atlanta I have also interviewed Pastor Wilson for SperantaTV, the Romanian Hope Channel, and we also discussed at length his obvious emphasis on revival and reformation.

Now I would only draw the attention to a typo. I have copied the paragraph until that mistake: Bible without capital B. If you can fix it, it would be fine.

Wilson outlined some specific expectations for the next five years. He introduced the launch of international Bible and mission conferences, hubs where pastors, teachers, Health Ministries workers and others can convene to study the bible

We thank the Lord Jesus, and our Father in heaven for this kind of spirit and approach to spiritual emphasis that will enable God's people to move forward with this message. If this approach is embraced in all our organizations and churches around the world, then surely the latter rain will be poured among the remnant. The third angel's message will be preached with power in our churches that are so wanting of spiritual renewal. The Loadecian message of 1) gold tried in the fire-faith and love that is the theme in the all the churches in the new testament, 2) eyesalve-spiritual discernment, 3) white rainment-the righteousness of Jesus, and 4) zeal for the third angel's message, will be the experience of God's people at this time. Our prayers are with you Elder Wilson as you continue give direction to the church.

What at an awesome president we have.Every step Wilson has taken since his ascendancy to the presidency of God's remnant church is a step in the right direction.God who knows the hearts of men chose him like He chose David as the King of Isreal.Paulsen did a good job but I have no doubt Wilson will do better. We are blessed to have a pragmatic and dynamic leader in Wilson most especially now apostacy has taken root in the church. He will surely lead us back to the old time religion;the faith of our fathers.Satan is already rattled with his choice and will do everything to scuttle the good plans he has.No doubt Satan's efforts will all be in vain.I hear the same old voice of God telling Satan"Touch not my annointed;and do my prophet no harm." Mr.President keep up the good job.You are in my prayers.God will surely see you through.

In response to our president’s call for revival and reformation particularly on personal and corporate prayer program, I will initiate a conference-wide prayer convention in Central Luzon Conference in the Philippines. I believe that a “push” for God’s people to a personal or corporate prayers are not a legalistic message but a message that will encourage or enhance one’s relationship with God. I believe this program will spur spiritual growth and active involvement in the Lord’s work among our church members. I believe this is God’s will for us people living in the last days. We need more power to advance the work of God and so we need more prayers to accomplish more for His kingdom and for His glory.

Dear pastor Ted Wilson President of the G.C., greetings.

Your messages on the 3rd and on the 28th of July were a blessing to me and assure me once again that during this quinquennium God will do it again on behalf of His church in this world. May God continue to give you the fullness of His Holy Spirit; along with you team of workers, while you lead His church.

Indeed we need to pray more often in these days and do the work with a humble spirit, because we are aware of the fact that our loving God won’t wait too long on us to accomplish the task if we willfully delay it for whatever reason. We are reminder by Ellen White that God is ready to “employ agencies whose origin man will be unable to discern; angels will do a work which men might have had the blessing of accomplishing, had they not neglected to answer the claims of God”.--The Review and Herald, Dec. 15, 1885, or SM. Book 1, p. 118.
Surely a quick work is needed to be done. Humility, consecration and prayer are vital. You are the modern Joshua chosen to lead God’s people. Please do not forget: “Faithful is He that calleth you, who will do it” (2Th 5:24).
Sincerely,
Pastor Heraldo Douff from Costa Rica in Central America.

It is my prayer that the spirit of Godly revival and reformation will be ablaze throughout the entire church. I am praying for your Mr. President and our leadership to stick with the Biblical principles you enunciated at GC and not to be daunted. Always speak the truth in love and love people truthfully. This will bring about the revival of "primitive" Godliness and a desire for souls that the prophet of the Lord spoke about. Thank you for accepting the challenge to lead this church. May God strengthen and protect you.

We are pleased Mr President with your vision for God's church as our chief undershepherd. Your inaugural message was really an inspiration. We in Jamaica continue to lift you up in prayer as you lead God's Remnant church at this trying moment in the history of the world.

I bring you greetings from the Christiana District of SDA churhes

Thanks Brother President. This focus is an answer to prayer. It is time for all of us to break up the fallow ground and seek the Lord .In this dispensation of the Holy Spirit the tyrany of self exaltation and spiritual indiference must end so that the Holy Spirit can be poured out upon us in latter rain proportion . Our posture has to be one of persevering prayer . Then revival will come with attending reformation . As a result of this experience there will be passion and love for the salvation of the lost. We will do our part in the Bahamas Conference. It is time to humble ourselves before God ."When we have entire , wholehearted cosecration to the srevice of Christ ,God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure ; but this will not be while the largest portion of the church are not laboreres together with God ." evangelism , p.699

May your heart tremble as you realize the power that rests in your hands at this time if you will be faithful to your High Calling. That power has been held back by our God far too long as He has waited for a man to humble himself before Him in prayer and seek for a revival and a reformation for His Church. A man that will call sin by its right name. I have and continue to pray for you and all those now around you Pastor Wilson, that you are a man called for such a time as this. We are told in the SOP that there will be a revival of such true godliness in the earth just before Jesus comes and this is I believe the time. Bless you and your family as you humbly submit yourself to the guiding and indwelling of the Spirit of the Almighty God. I tremble at the thought of what is to come now to our church. It is truly grand and glorious to see our General Conference President revive awareness of the Bible truth that Christians can in fact hasten or delay the return of our Lord. This concept, often called Last Generation Theology (and often scorned by promoters of the evangelical gospel in the contemporary church), is a strictly Biblical teaching, found in such New Testament passages as II Peter 3:10-14; I John 3:2-3; Rev. 7:1-3; 10:7; Col. 1:16-17).

Ellen White's signature statement on this great truth, found in Christ's Object Lessons, p. 69 ("When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own."), is merely borrowed from this theme as it is taught in Scripture. God is wating for a perfected, victorious generation, purified through imparted divine strength and active human cooperation.

Let us pray, at long last, that the promised revival of primitive godliness is on its way!

God bless!

Dear President Wilson,

I am praying for you. As a young woman in the Church I have become horrified at the alarming apostasy evident in the leadership and congregants alike. I am wondering where are the true Adventists? Do we not like being "peculiar" any more? Can we not see how much we are hurting the "One ALL TOGETHER LOVELY" with our love for the world? I long for a revival and reformation that will truly show our surrender to Christ Our Righteousness. Apart from seeing Jesus, there is nothing I desire more than to have more leaders of integrity to look up to in our churches-spiritual leaders who will stand though the heavens fall!!! These are the type of leaders and Christians that will turn the world upside down. Young people need living examples of righteousness, not Pastors or adults trying to recapture their youth by "befriending" the youth! Please Let God lead. Following all the counsels of God is not legalism. It is loving obedience and true Bible sanctification. God Expects nothing less from the "five... wise..." virgins. God bless you and your family as your remani faithful. Maranatha!

That's right, the Spirit of God has descended upon the Church; an open invitation has been thrown to all Seventh-day Adventists to bury self, get onboard and allow the Lord to use us all, to finish the work. As the prophet put it: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." -- Isaiah 1:18.

God through our new Church leader has opened His arms, asking us to join Him in the great work of saving our souls and that of humanity. We can't get any better open invitation than that. Can we? So, fellow SDAs, the time to murmur, argue and rationalise on Biblical truth is past. We can either accept this invitation for our blessing or reject it at our own peril. So let it be, LORD.

Amen to Pastor Wilson's message. God is now ready to use his church like never before. We have long been waiting for the latter rain to be poured out on God's chosen people. Unity is strength. Be ye holy for i am holy saith the lord. Only through humility of spirit and faith in Jesus Christ can we truly see the work God has for us to do. We have indeed stumbled off the pathway at times, but now it is time for all of us to get back. Seeking God has never before. If we truly beleive that Jesus will soon return, let us let go of self and the world and turn to Jesus with a repenting heart. He has long been waiting for this moment. Thanks again Pastor Wilson...we need the vision...Proverbs 29:18

EGW said,"We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history." {CET 204.1}. Let us not forget our history, specially our history of what was really happened in the GC Session in 1888. The clear explaination about Justification by faith was told there according to EGW, So she endorsed it for more than 300 times, but it was neglected by many.

I’ am happy of Pastor Ted Wilson’s envisions. I hope it will be answered by faithful believers so that, my prayer will be changed to hasten His coming than to delay His coming, because the church is not yet ready as I saw it.

Let us deny, empty ourselves completely! and let the will of the Lord be prevailed in our lives all the time.

This sounds really good on paper....but how can we have a revival of true godliness (as we so desperately need). If the majority of Pastor at GC level, Trans-Division level, BUC level, NEC/SEC level do NOT accept the prophet of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Ellen G White just as John the Baptist and Elijah's in their days for ISRAEL not the heathern (world) but for the house of Israel to call us back to Jehovah God?
Just as in 1 Kings 18:17, 18 Elijah when accussed falsely by King Ahab (The king of Israel who today would be the GC President or the like) turned and told him that he had forsaken the commandments of God.
Likewise Mr Ted Wilson this you must do. The Pastors need to be retaught as many of them who have been to our schools namely Oakwood University, Newbold College and the like know not the foundations of Adventism as preached by those who formed our church and as directed by the hand of the Lord (Early Writings 74).

If this is not done Mr. President then all that this "revival" will be is a flickering light of good emotions and will result in greater apostasy as in the times of Ancient Israel under Moses, Ancient Israel when the rejected John the Baptist/Christ....in the mouth of two or three witnesses [histories] let every word be established (Matthew 18:16).

I am encouraGED BY PASTOR Wilson's sermon. Only someone who knows God could have brought such a message to God's people in such a time as this.God's people are listening and it is time for revival and reformation. pastor Wilson do not be afraid, continue to be a watchman on the wall of Zion. We've taken our children to the last 2 GC sessions and it really gives them a vision for what the church is about and what they can achieve within it. Mailing books to the whole world is nice but if the church new people will be coming into is weak and has no grand vision that includes worldwide gathering, how will those people find a home and stay in the church?

Praise be to God for a spirit filled vision. This is what I have waited to hear from our leaders. Some of our leaders here in UK are dong their best to pour water on messages of revival and reformation and E G White. I am in agony for our beloved church. Many parts here churches are being fed with ecumenical messages. Time to go back to old time religion. Time to take our true identity by the grace of God.

I feel sad at this moment because it seems Pastor Wilson wants to take us down the same old road again. We're always trying programs that are supposed to do xyz for us and are promoted with such grand promises but they never work. In fact, they take us farther away from where we need to be because they try to fit us all into a certain mold that's 'religio-politically correct' according to what some people have an image of what an Adventist ought to be. Everyone who shares his culture thinks what he's saying is just great but normal people who hear him pronounce buzzphrases like 'kingly power' probably think he's from Mars. It's great for the choir but it just shows how out-of-touch the leadership and choir are with the people we're supposed to reach. If you're going to tell people to pray then say you aren't asserting 'kingly power' then don't you think you should first ask the people you're telling to pray how their prayer life is? They may have a much more vibrant prayer life than you do. Legalism isn't just about enforcing laws, it's also about role-playing instead of being real, running roughshod over people and setting agendas that are meant to appear to be the right thing instead of trying to take the true pulse a situation and acting with some sensitivity.

I really appreciate what the Lord has done. It's so splendid. He is God because he cares for his people. Indeed, the global family needs you at this hour of tough and challenge moment. We hope that God will be with you and guide you as you manage the affairs of the Church for the next five years.Stay blessed President Wilson. Amen!!

I have written two comments on the same day August 12, 2010. The second comment is a collected comment as below. Would you please use this collected comment instead of former comment? Thank you!

Praised God! We are so deeply thankful to God for giving us a spiritual and faithful leader Pastor Ted Wilson, new President of GC. I have recommended and summarily translated his sermon GO FORWARD to every SDA Church’s leaders, and preachers, and members in our Mainland China by emails as much as I know. I have also posted his whole sermon GO FORWARD on the Chinese website www.godsword777.net. It’s time to pray for revival and reformation earnestly, to stand for the Bible truth and the Spirit of Prophecy steadfastly, and to prepare ourselves quickly for the latter rain of Holy Spirit. It’s time to accomplish the last Holy Mission in Christ, and to hasten the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ!(2 Peter 3:11-12). A retired ordained minister, LuGuang, August 12,2010. (Instead of former comment).

Amen, Sister! Well put!

Yes Bro. Wilson but if ze Church is to be in one accord, she will have to take a stand against lesbianism and homosexuality and don't promote it as it is in accordance with Biblical principle.Because God blatantly desist those behavior, and at ze last GC session top ranking members of ze church actually voted for the church to accept these kind of learned behaviors. I'm praying for u and ur T.E.A.M.(Together Everyone Achieve More) God Bless.
