World Church: Special Projects Good, But Regular Missions Giving Vital, Leaders Say

"It's not about money, and it's not about me. It's about mission." So said Erika Puni, director of the Seventh-day Adventist world church's stewardship department, responding to what he sees as a potentially troubling trend in the giving habits of some Adventist church members. Rather than giving systematic Sabbath School mission offerings, he said more and more members are funneling their offerings toward special projects.

Kenya: Paulsen Marks Church Centenary, Backs African Graduate Education

Seventh-day Adventist world church president Pastor Jan Paulsen called for continued unity among believers as the Adventist church in Kenya marked the centennial of the arrival of its first missionary. A.A. Carscallen arrived in that country in 1906. Pastor Paulsen was among the church leaders who welcomed national vice president Moody Awori to the official celebration at a ceremony on August 23 in Kendu Bay Town, Kenya.

India: Hospital Reopens After Surat Floods Kill Six Patients, Damage Facilities

Massive pre-dawn flooding on August 7 is believed to have killed nearly 200 people, displaced 900,000 and devastated the economy of Surat, a city in Western India. The floods also caused massive damage to the Seventh-day Adventist Church's health care facility and campus there, known as the Medical Education Trust, Surat, or METAS. Six intensive care unit patients died after the flood hit at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time.

Hundreds of Global Mission Projects Given Green Light

More than 200 Global Mission projects got the go-ahead on Thursday, August 17, keeping 2006 on track to become one of the largest years ever for projects and funding. Meeting at the Seventh-day Adventist Church world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the Adventist Mission Committee approved all 266 proposed projects, most of which are located in the East-Central Africa and Northern Asia-Pacific regions. Funding approved for the projects totaled more than US$1.7 million, pushing the total 2006 project funding to more than $9.7 million.
