Education - "Journal of Adventist Education" interview

Mar 30, 2012

This week, Lisa Beardsley-Hardy interviews Journal of Adventist Education Editor Beverly Rumble.

Links mentioned in this video:

Adventist education is not school buildings – it is a philosophy.  It is about students and the teachers that teach them, that philosophy is best illustrated in the book Education but there is a journal – a journal of Adventist education that supports teachers and applying that philosophy in a variety of settings and we have Beverly Rumble, the editor nearly working for forty-one years with this journal to talk with us about it.  How many languages does the journal come in?

It is in four languages, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

And for those who can’t get it on paper, is it on the web?

It is, there are more that twenty years worth of articles in a searchable database in all four languages and the website itself is also in four languages.

JAE.adventist.org we will put that on the screen later and you have gotten a number of awards and nominations for first place.  What for?

We’ve had awards for articles on the philosophy of Adventist Education and we had won an award on how to have a butterfly garden at your school and an award for design for the General Conference issue of the journal among others for articles and for theme issues.

And this journal goes all around the world, it is not just here in the United States.

It goes to every continent.

What about homeschooling teachers, can they get this journal?

They can order it, they can order a subscription of five copies a year and they can even use a credit card to pay for the subscription

So any teacher, whether working in a school or outside of the Adventist system or teaching their own children in their home can take advantage of the Journal of Adventist Education.

Yes and we hope that also pastors will be able to read the journal as well as school board members and other people who are interested in Adventist education.

Thank you Beverly for what you are doing with the Journal of Adventist Education.

Thank you Lisa for your leadership.

Education

While Adventists advocated primary education for children as early as the 1850s, it wasn’t until the 1870s that the then fledgling Adventist Church began to develop a denominationally-based school system. Adventists believe in the redemptive purpose of education. Adventist educators focus not only on intellectual growth, but also on mental, physical, social and spiritual health.

Statistics

  • 1.7 million students study in the Adventist school system
  • The church operates three medical schools in the United States, Mexico and Argentina
  • Brazil and Nigeria are home to the church’s two law schools
  • The church operates 112 colleges and universities, almost 2,000 secondary schools and about 6,000 elementary schools worldwide
