In one of the final actions of the annual business meeting, leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church voted Oct. 14 to receive a document discussing the nurture of new members who join the church.

The document, titled "Evangelism And Church Growth—From Baptism To Discipleship," covers several ideas for the advancement of new members into a fulfilling lifetime of Christian faith and witness.

With one million people joining the worldwide fellowship of the Seventh-day Adventist Church each year, world church leaders are recognizing a need to help those who join the church grow and mature in both their faith and their membership in the church. As a faith community united in Christ, Adventists desire the new members feel welcome and to fully participate in the fellowship and mission of the church.

In remarks to reporters following the annual meeting, Pastor Jan Paulsen, world church president, said it is necessary that these concepts have a wider circulation and evaluation before the leadership would open a discussion on specific implementation procedures.
