World Church Leaders Elect New Officials ... New executives of the Seventh-day Adventist world headquarters were elected at the 2006 Annual Council on Oct. 10. The Council voted Pastor G.T. Ng, secretary of the church's Southern Asia-Pacific Region, to become an associate secretary at the world headquarters. Williams Costa Jr., communication director of the church in South America, as associate communication director. He will oversee media services as part of the corporate communication of the church, as well as coordinating Internet outreach plans. In addition, Edemar Kattwinkel, a field auditor for the church in South America, has been elected an associate director of the General Conference Auditing Service, or GCAS, and will continue to be based in South America. Pakistan: Pakistani President Awards ADRA with Service Medal ... Acknowledging the efforts of Seventh-day Adventist-run Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) during the South Asia earthquake of 2005, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf presented the Sitara-I-Eisaar ("Star of Sacrifice") to the agency during a ceremony held at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, D.C., on September 21. ADRA International president, Charles Sandefur, who accepted the award, said, "It [is] truly an honor to be recognized in such a way by the nation of Pakistan." He also noted ADRA's pleasure in accepting the medal on behalf of the many donors who contributed to the agency's immediate response when an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Southern Asia on October 8, 2005. Affecting more than four million people, the quake was the biggest natural disaster in Pakistan's history. Other organizations receiving the award included World Vision International, Catholic Relief Services, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). [ADRA/ANN Staff]
Philippines: Typhoon Sweeps Adventist Campus ... Faculty, staff and students on the campus of the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS), a Seventh-day Adventist-owned seminary and graduate school located in Silang, Cavite, the Philippines, are cleaning up after a typhoon packing sustained winds of over 100 mph (160 kph) swept across that country during the morning hours of September 28. Killing 72 people and displacing 900,000, the typhoon was the strongest to hit the Philippines in 15 years. While no one on the AIIAS campus was harmed, school officials report damaged buildings, uprooted trees, widespread debris, flooding, and several breaches in the campus's security wall. Additionally, the typhoon knocked out power for several days, cramping electricity and water supplies. Campus officials expect AIIAS will have fully recovered in time for the October 15 graduation ceremonies, during which 103 graduates representing 23 countries are expected to receive their masters or doctoral degrees. Hope Channel Turns 3 Years Old .... The Hope Channel celebrated its third anniversary on October 10. The Seventh-day Adventist-owned network has grown from two channels to six channels in the pass three years. Brad Thorp, president and Gary Gibbs, vice president for the Hope Channel, shared with Annual Council attendees testimonies of people's lives that have been changed watching the channel. They also shared the news that in New Zealand, NZ$1 million dollars was donated (or U.S. $650,000) to provide Hope Channel satellite dishes to low-income families. [ANN Staff]
United States: Sesame Street Character Cheers Up Children at Adventist Hospital ... During a Sesame Street Live tour, Elmo--the furry red Muppet character from the popular children's television show--made the rounds at Seventh-day Adventist-owned Florida Children's Hospital on October 4, cheering up young patients with an entertaining routine and bedside visits.
