United States: Adventist Woman Nominated as Brigadier General ...United States President George W. Bush has nominated Colonel Loree K. Sutton, a Seventh-day Adventist, for appointment to the grade of brigadier general. Colonel Sutton is commander of Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood, Texas. She assumed command of the center in July 2005.
"Colonel Sutton would be the first female Adventist to ever obtain that rank," said Gary Councell, associate director of Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries located at the Adventist world church headquarters in Silver Spring. He added, "Only 8 percent of people ever make colonel and out of all the general officers less than 1 percent make it to brigadier general."
Colonel Sutton has received numerous awards including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Order of Military Merit and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. She has served in a variety of operational positions both in the states-side and overseas, including deployment to Operation Desert Storm. Sutton holds a medical degree from Adventist-owned Loma Linda University and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Pacific Union College, also Adventist owned. [Jerry D. Madagascar: Small Group Bible Studies Brings Hundreds to the Adventist Church ... Saturday, May 12 marked the culmination of more than four months of concerted efforts by Seventh-day Adventist Church members in Madagascar to reach their neighbors with the message of Jesus Christ. In the nation's capital of Antananarivo 1,151 new members were baptized into the church at the Mahamasima Stadium. One hundred pastors performed the baptisms in a cross-shaped baptismal pool font. The loving atmosphere of small-group Bible studies was what led one family to join the church. "We've attended the Adventist Church on and off for years now, but this is the first time we felt truly cared for," said Lolona Radanieuna, on behalf of her husband and daughter, moments before they, as a family, entered the baptismal font. Papua New Guinea: Plane First Of Its Kind to Enter Country ... A brand new lightweight plane will be making its maiden voyage from Auckland, New Zealand, to Papua New Guinea (PNG) where it will be used to transport medical staff and much needed supplies to remote communities. At a time when many flight operators are pulling out of PNG because of rising costs, the PAC 750XL will be the first of its kind to enter the country and will be used by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to treat the sick in hard to reach places in the highlands of the country. "The last plane we bought was in 1977 so this new plane will definitely increase our capacity to serve the people in the country," says Roger Millist, chief pilot and chief executive officer of Adventist Aviation in Papua New Guinea. Established by the Adventist Church more than 40 years ago, Adventist Aviation flies supplies and medical staff and sets up temporary clinics to treat the sick in Papua New Guinea. Those with more serious conditions are also evacuated to hospitals. [Melody Tan/South Pacific News/ANN]
England: Newbold Church Centre Wins Design Award ... Newbold College's Church Centre, a grass-roofed structure on the Seventh-day Adventist school's campus won a joint design award on May 11. The building was entered into the Bracknell Forest Borough Council Design Awards for 2007 that encouraged a wide range of nominations from architects and developers to Parish and Town Councils to local residents and council staff. The church was one of 22 nominations. Ann Groves, Bracknell Forest Urban Design Officer, stated that the council nominated the church as they saw "a well constructed building with a modern, clean design that harmonized well with Moor Close, the Grade II listed building behind it." The panel of six judges also noted that the landscaping and layout had been sensitive to the grounds. The other winning entry was "The Courtyard", a new development in the town's Eastern Industrial Area.
