Church Outreach Program Contacts Amazonian Tribe, Ten Baptized

Dec. 15, 1998

Curitiba, Brazil … [ANN] Following a strategy of “Global Mission” that identifies people groups unfamiliar with the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s message, church workers in Brazil sought to contact an Amazonian tribe, the Cadwell Indians.

Living on a reservation in the Serra da Bodoquena of Brazil’s South Mato Grosso state, the Cadwell Indians were approached by an Adventist Global Mission team led by Vergilio and Antonio Vilhaba. Two years ago, one of the tribe who did not live in the Indian village was baptized into the Adventist Church, and provided the first contact with these indigenous people.

Because of the isolated nature of the region, outreach meetings in the village of Bodoquena could only be held four nights a month. After a one year series, ten Cadwell Indians were baptized by pastor Rhadzony Storch on November 22 at the Adventist Church in the city of Aquidauana.

A new Adventist Church is being organized in Bodoquena, using Global Mission resources and volunteers, together with funding from the local Adventist Church organization, the South Matogrosso Conference. [Melchiades Soares/Jonathan Gallagher]
