Adventist University Receives $280,000 Grant for Biology Research

Dec. 22, 1998

Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA … [ANN] Andrews University, a Seventh-day Adventist educational institution, is the recipient of a $280,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund undergraduate biology research.

While the grant is the largest that the Andrews biology department has ever received from the Arlington, Virginia based foundation, it is by no means the only money awarded, said Jack Stout, research professor of biology and Andrews biology chair.

Since 1981, the biology department has received six NSF grants that now total more than $1 million in foundation-funded research at Andrews. Since the NSF only funds 10 to 20 percent of the grant proposals it receives, the university’s string of funded grant proposals speaks toward the quality of scientific research at Andrews.

“Not only have they seen that we are scientifically productive,” Stout said, “but they have also recognized the quality of our program and our student researchers.”

The grant will be funded in four equal installments to support the ongoing study of animal communication.  One component of Andrews scientific research that has impressed the NSF is the emphasis on undergraduate research. For example, Stout reports that since 1994, more than 10 undergraduate biology majors have co-authored papers published in peer reviewed journals and in scientific abstracts.

There are currently 110 biology majors at Andrews. Typically, more than 50 percent of these students attend medical school and a high percentage of students who apply are accepted.
Andrews University is a comprehensive, doctoral-degree granting institution located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Founded in 1874 as Battle Creek College in Battle Creek, Michigan, Andrews is the oldest Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning in the world. [Jack Stenger]
