Even better than sliced white bread is whole grain bread, according to a new health campaign in Britain. A switch to eating whole grain foods-cereals and bread that use all three parts of the grain, including the bran and the germ-could save up to 24,000 lives in the United Kingdom (UK) alone.
More than 50 scientific studies have demonstrated that a diet rich in such foods can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer by up to 30 percent.
However, a recent survey revealed that 54 percent did not know what whole grain is, and 77 percent did not check what ingredients are in foods, while 72 percent said they would eat more whole grain foods if they were aware of the benefits.
The UK government recently announced that tackling coronary heart disease and cancer was at the top of its health agenda.
“We applaud this new initiative in the UK,” says Stoy Proctor, nutrition expert and associate health director for the world Seventh-day Adventist Church. “For many years the Adventist Church has been stressing the many advantages of a plant-based diet, especially the use of whole grain, unrefined foods. The scientific evidence is overwhelming-eating whole foods as God gave Adam and Eve right there at the beginning is the very best diet of all.” [Jonathan Gallagher]
