The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cameroon sponsored a five-day series of AIDS Awareness seminars, which began March 19. Dr. George Sanz, health ministries leader for the Adventist Church in the Africa Indian Ocean region, was the speaker for the events, which were held in the capital Yaounde.
The series, organized in partnership with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency of Cameroon, was applauded by the national government. A representative of the ministry of health attended thanking the church for the initiative.
Latest statistics show that 10 percent of Cameroonians are HIV-positive, while in urban areas and among some risk groups the figure rises dramatically, reaching as high as 20 to 27 percent.
