Wife of Adventist Radio Pioneer Dies

Mabel Richards, wife of well-known Seventh-day Adventist broadcaster H. M. S. Richards, died October 25, at 103 years of age.

Mabel’s husband founded the Voice of Prophecy ministry October 19, 1929, with a radio program on KNX, Los Angeles. Her son, H.M.S. Richards Jr., took over as speaker of Voice of Prophecy in 1969. Richards Jr. died in April 2000.

Today, the Voice of Prophecy broadcast is one of the longest-running religious broadcasts in the world and is heard either weekends or daily on 450 stations in North America. Programs in dozens of languages reach into nearly every country from more than 1,000 radio stations. A VOP weekly television program airs on several satellite networks.


Jamaica: Adventist Receives National Award

A Seventh-day Adventist church member in Jamaica was honored October 21 by the governor general of Jamaica, Sir Howard Cooke. The national ceremony was broadcast by radio and television from the governor general’s residence. The Commander of the Order of Distinction award was presented to Leon B. Wellington for his “distinguished service in the field of religion.” Wellington, vice president and communication director for the Inter-American Division, or region, of the church, has served the church for more than 25 years.


“Revelation Speaks Peace” Uplinked from Nova Scotia

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada ... [ANN Staff]

About 500 people are attending nightly evangelism meetings at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The 25-day series—Net 2002, Revelation Speaks Peace—is also being watched at more than 400 sites across Canada and the United States. The satellite uplink is also reaching some sites in the Caribbean and Australia. The series is sponsored by It Is Written, Canada, and runs from October 18 to November 17. It is the first “Net event” to be uplinked from Canada.
