Pematang Siantar, Indonesia ... [Elisha Gultom/AND/ANN]—The Adventist Church in Indonesia held a three-day Victims’ Assistance Seminar, which began Jan. 19, at the local church’s headquarters in Pematang Siantar. Indonesia: Relief Organizations Work Together in Meulaboh, Indonesia
Meulaboh, Indonesia ... [K. R. Sagala/AND/ANN]—Several humanitarian organizations are working together in Meulaboh, Indonesia where some 20,000 people died in the tsunami and most of downtown Meulaboh was swept away. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is working with the military and the government on relocating people who are currently staying in public buildings and schools.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) was the first non-governmental organization to register its presence in Meulaboh, and though many other NGOs have arrived with equipment, many of their supplies are in limbo due to transportation limitations.
The groups are providing medical relief supplies, makeshift clinics, food, cooking equipment, blankets, student supplies and tents for temporary education facilities.
Electricity supply is slowly being returned to unaffected houses in Meulaboh, and water is being distributed by tankers through the town. The only means of communication with Meulaboh is via satellite phone; it is expected that telecommunications will function again within two weeks.
