Nairobi's Uhuru (Freedom) Park resounded June 17 with prayers of thanksgiving for rain that recently ended a three-month drought in Kenya. The drought resulted in the deaths of numerous people and animals, and caused heavy losses of crops.

Kenya: Center Protects Young Girls from Early Marriage, Abuse

Most people agree that 12-year-old girls are still children and should get an opportunity to live as such. But often poverty and some local traditions force even 12-year-olds into premature adulthood. Let's look at Selina for example. Before she was even 12 years old she became the fourth wife of an 80-year-old man. This story resonates with many girls of the Masai tribe in Kenya. By age 10, Christine was already married to a 60-year-old man.

Zambia: ADRA Projects Improve Quality of Life for Residents

The quality of life is improving for residents of the Zambian communities of Simalama and Kabwe. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has found ways to bring practical help there. One is through an improvement project for its Life Skills Training Program that benefits orphans and children living in Kabwe. The second project is the completion of a grain mill in Simalama, which will shorten the distance that women walk to get grain.

Ghana: Adventist University Graduates Class, Gains Own 'Diploma' From Ghana's President

On the day Valley View University handed out diplomas to its 2006 graduating class of 149 students, the Seventh-day Adventist-owned tertiary institution in Accra, Ghana, received a "diploma" of its own: a "charter certificate" from Ghana's government that allows it to issue degrees. Though established in 1979, and accredited since 1997, the school's diploma programs had previously been affiliated with church-owned Griggs University in Silver Spring, Maryland.
