The Seventh-day Adventist Church's South American territory recently featured the ministry of a former professional basketball player who uses her skills to help the needy in the nation of Brazil. The 68-year-old Wagner Oliveira from Goiânia in Goiás is committed to reaching others with the Bible through physical activities. For the past 20 years she has led sports classes for children who live in rural areas and lack access to sports programs.
Her professional career in sports includes her time as a member of the Brazilian National Basketball Team. She continues to hold a series of state and regional tournaments, representing several teams. Today, she relishes playing basketball with children who live near her church in Porto Seguro through regular basketball games.
She knows the children are uninterested in attending a traditional church service, so she gives them a bible study at the end of every game. She said, "I am inventing ways of sharing God in a language the people understand."
She went on to say: "Everything is an opportunity to sow the seeds." [photo: South American Division]
