Newbold students lend a helping hand in Greece

Group wanted to connect with and encourage Adventist young people in Greece.

Twenty-seven students and six staff volunteers from Newbold College distributed food to the homeless on the streets of Athens during a 10-day mission trip to Greece, 21 March to 2 April.

The group aim was also to connect with and encourage young people in the Greek Mission, encouraging them in a community where there are few Adventists. Students partnered with the youth in Athens, particularly helping those individuals who find themselves living on the streets.

“I was impressed that the homeless people were so open and wanted to share their experiences with us,” said Fulvia Ruocco, an English Language student. “It made me think we should focus on the simple things in life such as helping people in need.”

The group of volunteers also carried out restorative work to wooden cabins located at the Greek Mission’s campsite in Kalamos.

“Our students completed the varnishing and restoration of all the cabins on site within two days,” reported Alastair Agbaje, Campus Chaplain. “This kind act showed their willingness and determination to do much-needed work for the Greek Mission.”

“We’re receiving messages from the youth in Greece saying that their hopes are up now and they see that The Mission is possible in Greece,” said Tihomir Lazić, Lecturer in Theology, who accompanied the students on the trip. Now, he reports, people are starting to come to church.
