Typhoon Damrey

Typhoon Damrey

According to disaster response officials in Vietnam, more than 4.3 million people in the nation's south central region have been affected by last week's Typhoon Damrey. The storm made landfall on November 4 and was the strongest typhoon Vietnam has experienced in 16 years. Approximately 395,000 are currently in need of assistance.

The storm killed at least 104 people, forced 35,000 from their homes and destroyed 33,000 hectares or 81,000 acres of crops. In addition, 49 water reservoirs in affected areas have nearly reached capacity. Officials are closely monitoring the reservoirs for fear of forced releases or outbursts.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Vietnam was the first International non-governmental organization to conduct immediate emergency relief. ADRA Vietnam conducted a food security project with assistance from ADRA International and ADRA Asia. Food was delivered to 650 households, the equivalent of 3,205 people, in two of the most severely impacted provinces. [photo: ADRA Vietnam]
