U.S. Opioid Epidemic

U.S. Opioid Epidemic

The president of the United States has called it a "national emergency." The total cost of the epidemic in 2015 was approximately 78.5-billion dollars. These facts served as a motivation for Loma Linda University Health to make the nation's opioid epidemic the focus of its recent "Spotlight on Health Policy" meeting. The meeting was held at the institution's Medical Center late last month. It was organized by Loma Linda's Institute for Health Policy and Leadership. It was also co-sponsored by the Center for Christian Bioethics.

According to the director of the Institute for Health Policy and Leadership, Doctor Wonha Kim, 91 Americans die every day due to opioid overdoses. More than 175 staff, faculty, students and administrators attended to discuss proper pain management by health professionals. Attendees and presenters also addressed the underlying issues that fuel opioid addiction.

Doctor Kim shared how Loma Linda is addressing the epidemic. She highlighted two recovery programs offered by the Institution's Behavioral Medical Center. Presentations were made about Loma Linda's newest Opioid Project and its Health Care Opioid Steering Committee.
