In the Brazilian prison system, criminal police officers play a crucial role. Responsible for maintaining order and security in the units, they face daily challenges and risk their lives for the benefit of society.
In 2023, according to the Public Security Balance of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, Brazil recorded the lowest number of intentional lethal violent crimes since 2010, representing a significant drop in the rate of violence in the country. This achievement, in large part, is attributed to the work of the security forces, including the criminal police.
Brazilian Statistics
Despite advances in reducing violence, criminal police officers face constant threats and risks in their daily lives. According to data compiled by the Yearbook of the Brazilian Public Security Forum, the number of active police officers murdered in Brazil increased in 2023, reaching an alarming mortality rate of 30%. These professionals face not only violence inside prison units, but also threats from criminal organizations outside them, making their work even more challenging and dangerous.
Empathy and solidarity
The Adventist community, through Prison Ministries, has provided moments of fellowship and emotional support for these professionals, offering everything from breakfast to psychological and spiritual assistance. These initiatives help to strengthen the mental health of these individuals, providing moments of relaxation and unity in the midst of adversity.
"We recognize the challenges they face daily and we are here to offer our emotional and spiritual support. Our goal is to provide moments of reflection and unity to strengthen them in their mission", highlighted the director of the Evangelism department for the Sul Espírito Santense Church headquarters.
